A glass staircase links a narrow rectangular new building and the square-plan old villa on the site of the former adjoining service buildings. The open courtyard and roof terrace are closed off by the new rectangular structure. There are: a large wall opening in the form of a corner-spanning Chinese moon gate, a Janus-headed stele (as a symbol of load-bearing and opening) and a retainer wall which extends into the landscape and ‘dissolves’ in a system of bars. All these elements connect the built and the natural environment.
