After an open competition for the new chemistry of the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen with the result of two first prizes, Gerber architects achieved acceptance of their design in a subsequent revision.
The Giessen Chemistry is a key discipline between medicine, biology, physics and the adjacent departments agricultural and food sciences. The integration of food chemistry enhances the profile of the developed chemical programs at the Justus-Liebig-University.
The design for Justus Liebig University in Gießen included a new lecture hall building and a new building for the chemical department. Both structures provide the urban framework for a new public square, the so-called Piazza South, at the southern end of the main circulation axis of the campus. The chemical department with a clear east-west orientation continues the structure of the existing buildings, whilst the lecture hall complex forms the structural termination of the campus axis with a north-south orientation.
