The development of the urban development concept for Europe’s largest canal port is an important future project for the city of Dortmund. Gerber Architekten received both recognition and a purchase in the recently decided urban planning competition with their design for the restructuring of the city quarter.

The central idea of the submitted design concept includes the strengthening of the green zones in a north-south direction as well as the connection and linking of grown structures, such as the allotment gardens and, via these, the dense development of the Nordstadt to the east. The new area to be planned is intended to be both a link and a buffer zone between the industrial port and the multicultural residential area. The concept is based on urban spaces with a high quality of stay, which offer the possibility of appropriation and development through a planned degree of “incompleteness”.
