Gerber Architekten is pleased to have received the honor of the Building of the Year 2015 (Bauwerk des Jahres 2015) for it’s Art and Media Campus Finkenau. Every year the club of architects and engineers in Hamburg (Architekten- und Ingenieursverein Hamburg) honors exceptional buildings which were built in the year of interest.
In a festive ceremony the architects, owners and every other member of the project team were handed out the winners certificate. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, October 11th at the Handelskammer Innovations Campus (HKIC), a winner building from last year.
The main building of the Art and Media Campus of the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg (the Schumacher Building) is being extended sensitively by the sculptural new building by Gerber Architekten and completes the campus. The flat single storey plinth along the Uferstraße which contains the campus cafeteria, closes one side of the courtyard and creates a spacious open café terrace with views of the canal and the campus courtyard. The terrace can be accessed from both sides. Above the plinth level is a three-storey block which separates the campus from the new residential area to the east and contains the library teaching and working rooms with sound, light and video studios. With its large areas of glazing the library achieves a bright friendly atmosphere with views of the water and the historical buildings nearby.
