Gerber Architekten has been awarded first prize during contract tendering to build the new Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg (HI ERN) for Renewable Energy Production. The design suggests a compact building where the space for the physics and chemistry laboratories are connected. The laboratory areas as well as the u-shaped science offices, which are directly attached to the laboratories, create space for communication and interdisciplinary exchange.

The HI-ERN is a branch of the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The institute’s mission is to expand research on renewable energy to support the transformation of the energy sector, focusing on printable photovoltaics and innovative methods for chemical energy storage.
