The multifunctional laboratory building is centrally located on the Poppelsdorf campus of the University of Bonn. With the positioning of the rectangular structure along the existing northern and western building lines and the three above-ground storeys with an additional technical centre, the new building blends in with its urban surroundings.
Various laboratory areas for research and teaching in the Faculties of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Agriculture will be created on around 7,000 square metres. The teaching and research laboratories will be spatially separated so that students, teaching staff and researchers can work independently of each other at the same time. In addition, open communication zones will be integrated to support networking and knowledge transfer.
Sustainability and energy efficiency have been given particular priority in the planning. This is achieved through energy-efficient laboratory and building technology, thermal insulation and a ventilation system with heat recovery, among other things. Additional climatic effects are provided by the façade greening and planting of the inner courtyard with larger, shady trees, which contribute to the cooling of the building and create a natural and pleasant quality of stay.
