Restructuring of functional areas – Hospital, Osnabrück

The refurbishment and restructuring of the functional areas is an important building block in the Masterplan 3.0 of the Osnabrück Clinical Centre with regard to its sustainable development as a location for maximum care. The hospital’s ecological self-image as a “green hospital” should also be reflected in the building structure.

The basic idea behind the design concept is to create centres for the specialist departments in order to achieve the highest possible medical quality standards for patients through interdisciplinary exchange and to create synergies for patients and staff. To this end, all non-medical functions will be relocated from the main building in a preliminary project in order to create space for the medically and technically high-quality centres. The aim is to create a digital, efficient and people-centred hospital that forms the structural basis for intelligent, environmentally friendly and gentle medicine.

The long and hitherto very narrow double-major corridors of the main development will be combined and extended to create an open, light-filled transformation area. Views into green inner courtyards and open waiting areas structure the resulting space. The new centres will have their reporting points in this spatial zone.

A new building block running parallel to the main thoroughfare homogenises the uneven ends of the ridge structure along the current service yard and connects the central emergency department and the hospital approach directly with the individual functional areas. An admission and discharge centre is being created to relieve the process flows in the wards.

The green façade of the building clasp in front of the existing components A1-A5, visible from afar, visually links all functional areas and forms a green connection to the surrounding area. With its energy-efficient mullion and transom construction made of wood and a greened stud frame, it is an ideal solution in terms of sustainability. Fast-growing plants climb up a secondary timber structure, providing effective solar shading and evaporative cooling. The façade blends harmoniously into its surroundings, both from a distance and close up, and its appearance declares the “Green Hospital” approach.

Warm wood building materials dominate the interior design and contrast with clear, light-coloured wall cladding made of glass building materials. These can be used for lighting and information systems from the rear. This gives public areas such as the main corridor or the waiting areas of the emergency department a high quality of stay.

Only building materials that can be reused after demolition are used in the building structures. The cradle-to-cradle principle applies here. The prerequisite here is the avoidance of questionable building materials and consistent product responsibility.
