Sarah Centgraf, Head of Digital Innovation at DBZ Deutsche BauZeitschrift, talks to Eckhard Gerber about which rooms motivate people to learn, what makes a successful educational building and how learning and architecture will change in the times of Corona.

Gerber Architects have received recognition for their design in the ‘Young Stage’ competition. A building was to be planned on the theatre grounds in the area of the current Young Opera House, which was intended from the outset as a temporary venue, to be used jointly by the Children’s and Youth Theatre (KJT), the Opera House and, for selected productions, the Ballet. The idea is based on a composition of a compact ‘House of Theatre Worlds’ and a ‘floating roof’, which connects all adjacent functions in a natural and maximally open manner, thereby dissolving the boundaries between outside and inside. For the young stage of the Theater Dortmund, a structurally clear and reduced structure is proposed, which captures and calms the existing heterogeneous structure of opera house and playhouse in an urban space.
The quarter is to grow together to form a complete ensemble and as such create a new urban quality in this location.
“Residental Buildings at Quartierspark”, Construction: 2016-2020
The project “Living at the Quarter Park” is located in the district south of the Elbe Neugraben-Fischbek in Hamburg. The two buildings with a total of 68 residential units are designed as two- and three-room apartments and are lined up as individual townhouses. When it comes to facade design, clinker is the predominant material. The design of the outdoor facilities, including the playground and the parking spaces, was part of the task of our landscape team.
“Residential Buildings at Sports Area Circle Stellingen, field A”, Construction: 2016-2020
The residential development with daycare on the sports field ring forms an independent quarter in the Center of the Stellingen district, embedded in a park-like landscape which is characterized by old and valuable trees. The individual houses are slightly offset from one another and varying in height to an arrangement total of eight building blocks. They mediate to the heterogeneous surrounding buildings, existing from detached houses and apartment buildings. The idea of the individual houses is further formulated in the Facade design. Each house is given light materiality Schade. By using different colored clinker bricks or by changing dressings a diversity in unity is formed.

In its spring session, the Wissenschaftsrat rated the Center for Advanced Liquid Phase Engineering CALEDO as “Outstanding”. This means that construction can begin at the TU Dortmund University in 2021. With more than 100 state-of-the-art workplaces, the interdisciplinary research center CALEDO offers scientists the best conditions for their top-level research on the knowledge-based design of liquid phases. In the future, liquid phases will be tailor-made for environmentally friendly and innovative processes in chemistry and biotechnology as well as for pharmaceutical products on approximately 3.600 m2 of laboratory and office space. The research carried out on Otto-Hahn-Strasse will drastically reduce expensive and time-consuming series of experiments. The German Science Council is the oldest science policy advisory body in Europe and advises the Federal Government and the governments of the federal states on all issues concerning the content and structural development of science, research and higher education.

We take the severe warnings of our federal government in view of the danger of the corona virus very seriously. The well-being of our employees and all our business associates is very important to us. For this reason, we would like to reduce all our social contacts as far as possible, or rather, wherever possible, do without them. For the protection of all of us, we would therefore like to avoid personal meetings. We also reduce meetings as far as possible, or will replace them with video and telephone conferences. We have decided that the majority of our employees will carry out their work in their home office, i.e. work from home, where they can still be reached via the same e-mail or telephone contacts as before. Considering the extraordinary situation, we try to do everything possible for our common projects. Nevertheless, sometimes there may be restrictions or delays in deadlines. We ask for your understanding in this situation and will always in individual cases keep you informed about the current state.
Thank you very much and stay healthy!
The competition for the expansion of IGS SÜD Langenhagen has been decided: Gerber Architekten received the 2nd prize for its design.
The areas designated for the expansion and the location of IGS SÜD, which was founded in 2014, offer a special starting point. The design is intended to interweave the green surroundings with their attractive tree population and the planned new building, creating an ideal place to live and learn. The existing buildings will also be integrated into the composition of the new school campus. The loosely scattered arrangement of the buildings results in a variety of public passages and view axes into the surrounding landscape. In spite of the distance to the neighbouring city district, this fanning out creates a natural network of the school complex. The wood-concrete-hybrid construction is not only an eye-catcher, but also gives the individual building parts a natural and lively character. Sustainability and closeness to nature are the formative ideas of the design as a counterpart to the school location with its open park landscape.
