Gerber Architekten are members of the initiative Phase Sustainability
The objective of the initiative “Phase Sustainability” is the transformation of the current planning and building culture towards sustainable building as the new norm. By participating in the initiative, the planners are demonstrating a new kind of solidarity with the understanding that we can only make the necessary changes and make our contribution to climate protection together and that we must and want to actively implement this in every project.
For the ‘Chinese New Year of the Metal Rat’ Gerber Architekten wishes you and your families much joy, prosperity, happiness, success and health. We thank you for the successful cooperation in the past year and look forward to new projects in the coming year.
May all your wishes come true!
The development of the urban development concept for Europe’s largest canal port is an important future project for the city of Dortmund. Gerber Architekten received both recognition and a purchase in the recently decided urban planning competition with their design for the restructuring of the city quarter.
The central idea of the submitted design concept includes the strengthening of the green zones in a north-south direction as well as the connection and linking of grown structures, such as the allotment gardens and, via these, the dense development of the Nordstadt to the east. The new area to be planned is intended to be both a link and a buffer zone between the industrial port and the multicultural residential area. The concept is based on urban spaces with a high quality of stay, which offer the possibility of appropriation and development through a planned degree of “incompleteness”.

In the architect competition for the new building of the educational institution, our design reached the 1st place. Compact volumes and a clear structure form the basis of the solitaire, encased in a white metal facade. The right-angled, four-story structure encompasses two courtyards: the atrium and the workshop courtyard. Both provide insights into the work areas of the Chamber of Crafts through glazed “shop windows”. The planned catering area on the ground floor with an adjoining terrace offers a view of the partially listed park area.
