The Berlin Chamber of Architects, together with the Federal Chamber of Architects, invites to an architectural debate on current educational buildings in existing buildings. The “Training and Research Centre for the Institute for Brewing (VLB)”, Berlin, Germany, a new building designed by Gerber Architects, is also one of the three projects on which four expert panelists will exchange views in the evening: Adriana Altaras, director and author, Wolfgang Kil, architecture critic and publicist, university professor Dr. Angelika Schnell, architecture theorist and Dr. Heinrich Wefing, head of politics, DIE ZEIT. The projects will be presented by Dr. Christian Welzbacher, art historian and journalist. The competition has been decided: We are pleased to report that Gerber Architekten has been able to win the competition for the new department building of Earth- and Environmental Sciences of the ‘Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität’ (LMU) Munich. Congratulations to the entire project team.
The new building for Department of Earth- and Environmental Sciences LMU Munich is a v-shaped sculptural structure which connects to the existing buildings in the northern part of the property as well as to the institute building in the south. The interior of the V-shape is designed as a glass hall, which at the same time emphasizes the entrance situation and offers a ‘showcase’ into the new building of geological and environmental science. The forecourt at the entrance continues into the hall, which serves as a public exhibition area for large scale exhibits or events. The Institute can present itself in this spacious airspace with all its working areas, as both the first basement with the workshop spaces, the library landscape on the ground floor and the generously glazed laboratory areas on the upper floors are oriented towards the hall. The boundary between outside and inside is removed – research can be experienced directly.

Since July 2, Prof. Eckhard Gerber has been on a 10-day lecture tour in China, visiting the cities of Chengdu, Harbin and Shenzhen as well as the new offices of the Shanghai location. At the beginning of his journey Prof. Gerber talked at the ‘China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute’ in Chengdu (CSWADI) in his lecture ‘Between Architectural Worlds’ (see photo). Followed by a lecture at the ‘Harbin Institute of Technology’ (HIT) on July 9 titled ‘Architecture in the context of landscape and open space’. Especially the combination of architecture and landscape has always played an important role in the buildings of Gerber Architects. Professor Gerber’s buildings often consciously formulate the transition between built urban space and landscape or define new landscape spaces through their cubature and their positioning on the property itself.
