Project Information
The redesign of Area West will fill the last remaining gap on the northern banks of the Elbe in Hamburg-Altona. The area of 17,500 m² is situated between Columbia and Elbkaihaus. The urban design concept refers to the existing architectural structures of the former fishing port and to the old fish halls in the shape of horizontal, rather low buildings along the waterfront. Clear spatial distributions on the plot, a functional design of the buildings with variable arrangements and sophisticated floor plans lead to a sustainable mix of commercial, office, residential and hotel use. The new buildings and their roofs form the transition from the hillside to the water surface. Gastronomy and retail spaces on ground floor level revalue the promenade as well as the squares along the riverside.
