Extension of the Emschergenossenschaft head office

The extension to the headquarters of the Emschergenossenschaft und Lippeverband reflects the self-image of Germany’s largest water management association. The design is characterised by ecological and energy concerns in dealing with the representative building, which was built in 1909 according to a design by Wilhelm Kreis. The listed Emscherhaus and its various extensions will be added to form a new building ensemble that rounds off the edge of the block. A green inner courtyard, in whose design the theme of water plays a special role, replaces the former car park and forms a central recreation zone.

Diagonally offset from the historic main entrance, a new, additional entrance situation is being created on the southern corner facing away from the street. From there, the new foyer provides access to the upper office floors and the staff restaurant with a view of the inner courtyard. The new building marks a significant step towards modern working environments. With variable office configurations ranging from individual to group offices, its room programme offers the opportunity to react flexibly to new work situations.

In the grid façade of the new building sections, a generous glass surface marks the entrance area and creates a visual connection to the neighbouring park area. The depth of the new façade level provides pleasant shading for the interior spaces. As an integrating element, it adapts to the historic Emscherhaus in terms of its grid structure and colour scheme. The green roof of the timber hybrid building is accessible and serves as a viewing platform for the city.
