The new ensemble of buildings – the Institute Building for the Chemistry Department and the interdepartmental Auditorium block – are situated at the end of the central campus route, and create the framework for a new public square – the ‘South Piazza’. The four-storey, rectangular institute building encloses a planted internal courtyard on the long side of which runs a public, glazed circulation route which follows the contours of the topography. This route provides access to all parts of the building and divides the Chemistry department into a research area and a practical area. The practical laboratories as well and the research units are all planned to allow flexible layouts and look onto the greenery of the courtyard.
