After eleven months of construction, the structure of the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energies (HI ERN) has been completed. To mark this, the topping-out ceremony will take place on 12th December 2018 at 2pm at the building site on the university campus of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität, Cauerstraße 1, in 90158 Erlangen. Gerber Architekten has developed a compact and functional building which will be the new headquarters of the institute. It meets high user requirements and at the same time communicates the work of the institute to the public by its facade design – the variations of the panels are inspired by patterns from nanotechnology. In future, the HI ERN as part of the Forschungszentrum Jülich will focus on research into printable photovoltaics and innovative methods for the storage of chemical energy.

Prof. Eckhard Gerber has now been active for 50 years with his practice Gerber Architects and has established a reputation as one of Germany’s most important architects. He is also well respected internationally—the practice is successfully working in China as well as the Arabic countries. Gerber was born in Oberhain, Thuringia, and will celebrate his 80th birthday on 13 October 2018. Prompted by this occasion, the newly opened Baukunstarchiv NRW in Dortmund will host the “Konzept + Atmosphäre” exhibition from 23 November 2018 to 3 February 2019. Using ten completed projects and a range of different media, the exhibition brings to life different architectural atmospheres. Included are also six projects that are currently being worked on, promising to give an insight into the concept phase and the design process. Furthermore, the architect talks about his profession in specially produced film interviews. The exhibition will be accompanied by public round-table discussions between Prof. Eckhard Gerber and a guest, the first such discussion taking place on 28 November 2018 between Prof. Gerber and Prof. Volkwin Marg (gmp Architects). Further dates will be publicized nearer the time.
